ARGENTINA-The Turning Point

22.01.2010, 180th Days

Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

@ Andre: Happy Birthday Birthday! I keep my fingers crossed for the Zwischenpruefung.

At the turning point. South, goes only by boat or plane. With a motorcycle trip from now on will in principle to the north. After 18,000 km we could be back in Alaska. It took me from there to here about 25,000 km, have made my very beautiful 'tangled', but it was good. Yami damping and coupling show their extraordinary stress significantly. To Buenos Aires, there are slightly more than 3,000 km, we schau'n times. Until then, it has yet to hold.

Compared is the last crossing the border in San Sebastian a boon. The Chilean officials think and gives us the entry forms for the return by the same. The Argentine Zoellner -16 km further-are placed really well. A young couple flirting uncontrollably with each other officials, the customs officer, who sings my issuing import permits for Yami out merrily. Imagine something like that before in Germany. Only replace the Chilean money against Argentinean here, no one wants. The Route 3 is in good condition. What does that mean the occasional standing around signs with the number '80 'will not open up to me. So we swish through endless pampas, although the road is fenced in parallel. Rheas, guanacos, foxes, horses, Sheep can we fail to disturb. The Argentine dogs are as silly as those in other countries. Wild grass they yapping on the motorcycles and highlight the strong Maximum about 100 km from Ushuaia, the road leads through a mountain range in fast corners.

The wind keeps in pleasant borders, makes driving fun again. Early afternoon receives us-supposedly-the southernmost city in the world with sunshine. After we found a nice place to live, we nozzle width to the National Park to the end of Route 3 in order to shoot the obligatory 'photographic evidence. " Here, tourists are several bus loads for the same purpose. So much dust to kick up the buses, as in this hour, I have not swallowed the last 4 months along. All because of a photo. For a German tour group, we were the attraction. The photos have made more of us than others of the billboard.

Hears About noon the rain in Puerto Natales. Our signal for onward travel. Luckily the road is well paved and pretty little traffic because the Wind blaest uns ordentlich um die Ohren.

@ Irmi: Congratulations on your birthday-Supplements!

@ Hello Schorsch, old, happy birthday!

I wanted to walk a few days in Torres del Paine National Park, but my leg still does not allow it. So we are with camping equipment, and the intention to stay for 2 to 3 days down, with the bike there. The famous towers have been shrouded in clouds and the Grey Glacier, we have because of high costs on the one hand and the fact that we with the Pio XI have seen the bigger, given. The emerging rain made it an easy decision, in the evening return back to Puerto Natales.

Martin takes a break. I go to Puerto Varas , then to the island of Chiloe .

Puerto Varas could be in Germany.

The small wooden churches on the island should be the assembled without a nail.

In Castro I try Curanto. The local, rustic specialty consists of mussels, abalone, pork, coarse sausage and potatoes cooked in a bed of hay, said in a Erdfeuer. Together with a cup of dry white wine, I enjoyed the exotic dish. The host is an unobtrusive way curious and talkative. We talk during of eating all the time. He is a pleasant interlocutor. His wife, however, rattles like a machine gun I hardly understand a word of it. Too bad she has kind eyes and a mischievous smile, intended plenty of humor.

Curico, Chile

On the road again! Martin from Innsbruck, according to his Transalp and I do together south, take the first time to Santiago. His clutch shows weaknesses. In the Avenida Lira Motorradlaeden there are plenty, but not for Honda. We are just around the corner. The matching clutch discs they have not. Tomorrow we could pick up, says the friendly Boss. The Honda Center would only sell to dealers. Taxi courier? That works too. An hour later we have the parts for a total of 65 U.S. $. Marco Lopez Valpo have wanted for $ 80, and we would have had to wait another day. He referred me to the Karoo tires from Metzeler. From 110, the pace Yami lurches and rocks on the road to dangerous. This does not change even after the other and with different Gepaeckverteilung Reifendruecken. The tire is not made for the road. make the front wheel bearing noise exchanged by him. The guy I could connect anywhere. Bikers come from, you Valpo after a large curve to make Marco Lopez's store. The next 1,000 km of asphalt I will get behind me. After that it should only noch Schotter geben.

builts At 24:00 hrs from the city in the Bay of 18 platforms a half hour Riesenfeuerwek. people drink, hug and kiss.

The rear wheel is only 1.5 bar pressure. Such sloppiness can not stand me. On Monday, 4.1. see me again the workshop. On a good new.

Martin from Innsbruck is my roommate. His Transalp hangs in the port of Valparaiso. Before 4.1. he gets them. Together with the Berliners we make ourselves a good time. Cool down. Hopefully my feet will do it well.

Hiker, you are going to Chile to see that you do your part before you in order!

@ Angela, Congratulations on your birthday!

converts the road to toll a highway. The road is great, the toll is not worth mentioning. But stop approximately every 50 km, glove, pay to glove on. That sucks.

Twice I have to tighten the chain, because they slip over the sprocket. Santiago before it goes through a mile-long tunnel without hard shoulder. If this pulls the chain, or jump off! I am completing the perceived longest tunnel ride of my life without a hitch. Pfff. After the tunnel, there is a different world, green juicy. For weeks, no more desert. My feeling is almost euphoric. I realize how much I still on Western European Landform am shaped.

5o km off the highway branches off from Santiago to Valparaiso. My horror of Moloch large cities is so great that decide immediately, the risk to 100 km to Valparaiso with my chain Adhaesionsantrieb. Should there be any parts, I could still take the bus to Santiago and take care of me there.

the afternoon, I somehow think the Villa will Kunterbunt, greeted warmly with a beer. Martina organized the repair of the Yami, the next morning I can to the workshop. Peace is in me. The tooth depth has decreased to 5 mm. I do not care. The workshop is going down the mountain.

Toni and Alexandro, 2 from San Francisco, have their Harleys with which they were traveling in Chile and Argentina, already shipped. Tomorrow they fly home. Their reports and tips are very helpful to me. There with a Harley through the Carretera Austral, violently. Obviously But this is also Alex-in-my age is done.

The Panamericana now swung back to the coast. Now and then, even a green spot shows in the landscape. If not for a slight nagging worry about my chain, it would be 'easy riding' was. Los Vilos is a fishing village on the Pacific. For a long time I have eaten good fishing while enjoying the sunset.

When looking for a place to appeal to me Armanda, a small, petite, older woman with a squeaky voice. They would rent privately, a motorcycle parking, they would have too. Their mini-home is on the outskirts, she sleeps on der Couch im Wohnzimmer, die anderen Zimmer vermietet sie -offensichtlich nur gelegentlich.

The Yamaha shop in Antofagasta has open, even a matching necklace, but not the necessary gear and sprocket, crap. But a low-cost Flip-Up! And finally, the right motor oil. So I buy the long-overdue oil change Yami, a new spark plug first, after 40,000 km, and to me the helmet. It's still Christmas.

Antofagasta, Chile

In Calama were brought children from midnight. They had fun up at 3:00 clock in the morning, I with. I guess I just have had to sleep in the morning. So the next trip started just before noon. My chain drive gives me grief, perhaps I find in Antofagasta a new and a new helmet. The eh no longer functioning rear sight of my old I build from, go without.

The road there is a mostly straight, super-paved road, almost a highway, no vegetation by Atacamawueste.

Near Antofagasta marked a sign of the Tropic of Capricorn, I leave 'officially' the tropics. Atacama is the driest desert of the world, I was sick on this trip so far rain. ANYTHING less would not hurt me.

Antofagasta is a city of contrasts. On one side of the Pacific, on the other the desert. Here, the bustling life on / in the harbor, where dust and seemingly lifeless desert. Thus developed the city: Emerging shops and skyscrapers of the sea in the west, Wellblechhuetten east.

The city makes you forget that they are in the middle of the desert. Here it looks like in a Western European mid-sized city, no South American flair. The drivers keep outsiders strictly to the road rules. What's going on? The shops now have until 19:00 clock, some open until 21:00. Christmas is only 25!
